World-leading research
The charity is in a unique position to provide training. It is a world leader in research into the specific
profile of developmental needs for children and young people with Down syndrome.
The charity's research has examined issues from pre-school reading to teenage social issues and has
led to changes in educational practice for children with Down syndrome over the past 20 years.

An expert team
Led by Professor Sue Buckley and
Gillian Bird, the charity's team of psychologists and speech and language therapists includes
internationally renowned experts in the education and cognitive development of individuals with Down
syndrome.
As well as research expertise, the team has extensive experience of delivering services and support
to families and professionals working with people with Down syndrome from birth to young adulthood.
The charity has provided early intervention services for preschool children with Down syndrome for more
than 20 years, and has provided hands-on support to children with Down syndrome included in mainstream
schools in Portsmouth since the 1980s.
The charity's team also provides our training courses, ensuring that training is provided by practitioners
with appropriate experience and expertise.
