The use of signing in primary schools
The use of signing can be a valuable tool for communication for some children with Down
syndrome. There is a lack of research examining the use of signing to support children with
learning difficulties in mainstream schools.
Research
This study will examine how 4 primary schools are engaging with signing when
supporting a child with Down syndrome who does not communicate effectively
using spoken language. The use of signing will be analysed through
observations in the classroom and interviews with school staff, parents and
pupils. Video footage will be used to explore staff perceptions of signing
in the classroom.

for reproduction in the newsletters and journals of associations, support groups
and professional societies. The study results will also be shared
through the charity's training courses and its contributions to
conferences in the UK and worldwide.
