Down Syndrome Issues and Information
Down Syndrome Issues and Information is a major series of practical and
informative books about the entire range of developmental, health and
social issues relating to individuals with Down syndrome.
This project will continue to form the core of the Trust’s
information offering.
The Down Syndrome Issues and Information books have been written by some
of the world's leading experts based on years of research and hands-on
experience.
The Down Syndrome Issues and Information materials are divided into
three main series:
- the Education series covers all aspects of the education and development
of children with Down syndrome from birth to late teenage years
- the Adult Living series covers the issues relevant to the quality of
life for adults with Down syndrome - including lifelong learning, social
skills, employment, independent living and relationships
- the Health Care and Medical Issues series will provide parents and
medical practitioners with clear and up-to-date information about the health
issues associated with Down syndrome from infancy to old age.
Each of the series aims to provide information that is relevant to the
widest possible audience of parents, therapists, and teachers. This
means that the amount of detail included in each book varies, but they
all assume no prior specialist knowledge or training.
The Down Syndrome Issues and Information books enable the Trust to share
reviews of relevant published research, practical, evidence-based
strategies to promote development, and proven medical
interventions.
- A single, comprehensive and integrated reference
resource explaining current understanding of the full range
of issues relevant to the lives of people with Down syndrome
from birth to old age
- Effective care, support and education from informed
families and practitioners, leading to improved outcomes for
people with Down syndrome of all ages
The Down Syndrome Issues and Information project has been supported by
grants from: The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation, The Freemasons' Grand
Charity, Marchday Charitable Trust, The Lloyds TSB Foundation for England
and Wales, The John Ellerman Foundation, The Roger Vere Foundation.
By 31 March 2007, the Trust had published 24 books in the Education series, and 11 books
in the Adult Living series. Initial planning work on the Health Care and
Medical Issues series has been undertaken and an editorial board
appointed.
Further information resources under development include the remaining books in
the Education and Adult Living series, the books in the
Health Series. Subject to securing funding, online editions of the Down Syndrome Issues
and Information books will be prepared.
The work with these primary reference
resources will then shift to updating and revision, and further work
with other organisations on translations.
Funding
The Trust secured grant funding to cover the development costs
of these materials. Charges are made for printed materials to cover the
costs of printing, updating and distribution.
The Trust is seeking funding to enable conversion of the
materials into online versions to be made available for free.
