The charity's Development in practice - Teaching
children with Down syndrome to read DVD video will provide detailed
step-by-step guidance for parents and educators on helping thier
children learn to read and write.
Teaching children with Down syndrome to read
Following the success of the
published films in the Down Syndrome In Practice series, the charity has
secured funding to produce a further film in the series.
The new Development in practice - Teaching reading to
children with Down syndrome film will provide detailed step-by-step
guidance for parents and educators and is planned to cover the following
areas:

Getting started – learning a first sight vocabulary and reading
simple sentences for meaning

Learning phonics – learning letter/sound correspondences, learning to
decode and to blend words, learning to spell

Reading texts – teaching strategies to support reading comprehension

Writing – putting sentences together, recording work in the
classroom, telling a story

Developing handwriting
-
Using reading activities to develop better spoken language
-
The benefits of reading and supported reading activities for speech,
language and memory development
The video will demonstrate these topics by showing children reading and
being taught to read from preschool age through primary school years (up to
11 years old).
This new DVD is expected to be published by Autumn 2008 - check this
