Down Syndrome Issues and Information - Health Care series
The Down Syndrome Issues and Information (DSii) Health Care series
will provide parents and medical practitioners with clear and up-to-date information
about the health issues associated with Down syndrome from infancy to old age.
About the Health Care series
Enabling effective health care
Most of the health care and medical issues for individuals with Down syndrome are
similar as for the general population. However, there are a variety of health and
medical issues for which the risk of occurrence is higher among people with Down
syndrome.
The aim of the Down Syndrome Issues and Information - Health Care series is to provide parents and medical
practitioners alike with clear, relevant, up-to-date and detailed information about
the whole range of health issues associated with Down syndrome. The Health
Care series will complement the existing guidelines available from other
national Down syndrome organisations.
The Down Syndrome Issues and Information - Health Care series will help medical professionals provide appropriate
health care for patients with Down syndrome, and will give parents the information
they need to help individuals with Down syndrome access effective treatment.
Structure of the Health Care series
The Down Syndrome Issues and Information - Health Care series will consist of a several age-related overview
books, backed up by a range of detailed topic-related books.
Overview books
The overview books will provide a general introduction and broad reviews of healthcare
and medical issues across different age bands.
These books will be targeted in particular at the non-specialist audience including
parents and carers, but will also be comprehensive enough to be of value to general
practitioners (family doctors) and other professionals including health visitors
and nursing staff, speech and language therapists, education professionals, and
professionals involved in healthcare policy formulation and management.
Topic books
The detailed topic books will be primarily targeted at consultants/specialists working
in these fields, along with general practitioners and nursing staff. They will contain
the latest information on particular problems, including extensive discussions of
diagnosis and treatment. However, they will also be written so that they are accessible
to the more interested non-specialist (for example, families concerned about a particular
medical issue).
Each of the detailed topic books will cover an issue or group of issues related
to a particular area of medicine. At these stage, we plan to cover the following
topics: immune system • vision • hearing, ENT and sleep • cardiac issues • gastrointestinal
issues • musculoskeletal issues • endocrine issues • neuropsychiatric disorders
• nutrition • unorthodox therapies • haematology • dermatology • screening, counselling
and genetics
