A brighter outlook
For many people with Down syndrome, the outlook has never been brighter. Increased
life expectancy, higher educational achievements and greater social inclusion are
improving the quality of life for people with Down syndrome in many countries.
Down syndrome cannot be 'cured', but this does not stop people with Down syndrome
learning to speak, read and count, receiving a good education, playing and working
within their community, and enjoying rich and fulfilling lives.
Proven interventions
Many things are often promoted as 'treatments' or interventions for Down syndrome.
Many are highly speculative. Some are marketed with misleading, inaccurate or outdated
information about Down syndrome. Few have been shown to be effective in any way.
At present, there are no drug treatments or nutritional supplements that have been
shown to have any benefit for people with Down syndrome. However, there are early
intervention strategies, and developmental and educational approaches that have
been shown to be useful and these are available today.
We cannot honestly promise miracles. But we can support a brighter future. There
are many ways to help people with Down syndrome achieve more today and they are
supported by good evidence.
