Our work for individuals with Down syndrome
People with Down syndrome and their families are at the heart of all we do.
Our work improves the development, education and social achievements of many thousands
of people living with Down syndrome around the world today.
“I support The Down Syndrome Educational Trust because it helps children and grown
ups with Down syndrome all over the world. It helps them to learn to read and write
and do all the other things that the doctors said I would not be able to do when
I was born but that I can do now.” Sarah

Focusing on practical outcomes
Through its practically-focused research and its wide range of services, the Trust
helps thousands of individuals with Down syndrome each year to achieve their potential
and be fully included in society.
Research impact
Our practically-focused research has led to a better understanding of the effect
of Down syndrome on the development of young children. Through all of our research
projects, we aim to provide practical benefits to the children taking part in the
studies.
As a result of our research, many children with Down syndrome worldwide are now
routinely taught to read, count and use sign language from an early age, and benefit
from being included in their local mainstream school.

Direct support
Our wide range of hands-on services provide direct benefits to hundreds of children
with Down syndrome each year.
We run pre-school early intervention groups, support children included in local
mainstream schools and provide detailed assessment services. Through these activities
we also aim to develop models of best practice we can share with
families and professionals.

Improving services
By providing practical information, training support and advice for the
professionals providing services for children with Down syndrome and their
families, we aim to help these professionals improve the quality and effectiveness
of the services they deliver.
For example, we are contributing to the UK Government's Early Support project
to improve services for children under 3 years.
In this way, our work has an indirect benefit for many thousands of individuals
with Down syndrome in the UK and worldwide each year.
