Preschool reading study begins initial assessments

Our study examining the factors influencing the development of early reading and language skills is now well underway with initial assessments and tests in progress with 40 preschool children with Down syndrome. This study aims to determine the key factors influencing preschool reading and language development and apply this knowledge to improve early teaching advice and resources. Read more...

The Sue Buckley Research Fund aims to improve education for people with Down syndrome by accelerating progress in scientific research and ensuring widespread access to evidence-based advice and information.


Goals

The goals of the Sue Buckley Research Fund focus on the areas where we can make the most gain most quickly for people living with Down syndrome today.

Progress

How can we help children with Down syndrome to speak more clearly? Can we teach more children to read - even those who struggle most? Are sleep problems making learning harder? How common is a dual-diagnosis of Down syndrome and autism? Can we improve memory, thinking and problem-solving? How can we help teachers deliver extra support for language and reading in the classroom? Since launching the Sue Buckley Appeal in December 2007, we have made substantial progress in answering these questions.

The Lord Wedgwood Award

Lord Piers Wedgwood of Barlaston is backing the Sue Buckley Research Fund with the Lord Wedgwood Down Syndrome Education Research Award. The recipient of the award for 2009 was Bob Sillett, who has raised in excess of £30,000 towards The Sue Buckley Research Fund through an international lecture tour.
