Down Syndrome Education International
Down Syndrome Education International is a charitable limited company,
registered in England, delivering research and
international publishing, training and services.
The charity was first established as the Portsmouth
Down’s Syndrome Trust under a deed dated 2 July
1997, incorporated as The Down Syndrome Educational
Trust, a charitable company limited by guarantee and
having no share capital, on 21 October 1996, and
renamed Down Syndrome Education International on 20
May 2008, company number 03266266, charity number
1062823.
The activities of Down Syndrome Education
International are controlled by its
Board of Trustees (who are
directors of the charitable limited company).
Down Syndrome Education USA
Our American partner organisation Down Syndrome Education USA is a nonprofit
public benefit corporation that is developing education, publishing, consulting, training and
research activities in the USA, under the control of its Board of
Directors.
Down Syndrome Education USA is a California Nonprofit Public Benefit
Corporation incorporated on 7 May 2008, EIN 26-2566125, and exempted
from Federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue
Code. Down Syndrome Education USA is
not under the direct control of Down Syndrome Education International
but collaborates through a Memorandum of Understanding with Down
Syndrome Education International.
Down Syndrome Education UK
Down Syndrome Education UK will be a UK charitable trust that is being
formed in 2009. Down Syndrome Education UK will fund UK-focused
research, training and services. It will offer a restricted-purpose fund
for donors seeking to specifically support work for young people with
Down syndrome in the UK.
Social enterprise
Down Syndrome Education Enterprises Limited
Down Syndrome Education Enterprises Limited is a limited company,
registered in England. It is wholly owned by Down Syndrome Education International and
operates primary-purpose trading activities ("trading that is carried on
by a charity in the course of carrying out a primary purpose of the
charity” CC35 - Trustees, trading and tax, Charity Commission, UK, 2007)
