Our name

Our name, Down Syndrome Education International reflects the charity's focus on the education and development of individuals with Down syndrome. Prior to 2008, the charity was called The Down Syndrome Educational Trust.

We are also commonly known as 'downsed' - we developed this name as a contraction of our full name, Down Syndrome Education International, by taking the word 'down', the letter 's' to represent the word syndrome and 'ed' to represent the word education.

Many people often refer to us as 'The Sarah Duffen Centre'. This is actually the name of our headquarters in Southsea, Hampshire, UK.
