Issues in Depth: Speech and language development for children with
Down syndrome (birth to teenage years)
This training course aims to provide speech and language
therapists with a summary of the latest relevant research findings and
to identify the implications of the research information for designing
effective speech and language therapy for children with Down syndrome
from birth to teenage years.
Audience
This is a one-day training course for qualified speech and language
therapists only.
We also run Skills in Depth training courses for parents and
professionals to help them promote
speech, language and literacy for children from birth to 5 years,
and from 5-11 years.
Aims
The course aims:
- to provide speech and language therapists with a summary of the
latest relevant research findings into the speech and language
development of children with Down syndrome
- to identify the implications of the research information for
designing effective speech and language therapy for children with
Down syndrome from birth to teenage years
The focus of this one-day course is to underline the principles that
should guide the development of effective practice for each aspect of
speech, language and communication development.
Much of the course content will be relevant to working with
children with similar profiles of specific speech, language and memory
difficulties relative to non-verbal abilities, such as children with
specific speech and language impairment and children with hearing
impairments, and children with similar levels of learning disabilities,
as well as with children with Down syndrome.
